You are all encouraged to write about great projectors out of your context so we may learn from them and improve our way of performing projects. “Projector” is a term introduced by Daniel  Defoe in “An Essay upon Projects” (1697). It refers to people that “project” into the future and thus make them real. A true projector is “he who, having by fair and plain principles of sense, honesty, and ingenuity brought any contrivance to a suitable perfection, makes out what he pretends to, picks nobody’s pocket, puts his project in execution, and contents himself with the real produce as the profit of his invention.” History is full of those people, let´s make use of their stories by explaining the narrative behind. The Impact of the First World War and Its Implications for Europe Today

Image
The Impact of the First World War and Its Implications for Europe Today When Europeans commemorate the Great War of 1914-18 this summer they should be reflecting not only on the diplomatic blunders and the enormous waste of lives but also the beginning of a new approach to international relations epitomised by the EU. The First World War was a calamity for Germany and Europe. The Second World War was an even bigger calamity for Germany and Europe. But without both World Wars there would be no European Union (EU) today. The EU has provided the essential infrastructure to deal with ‘the German Question’ – the role of the largest and most powerful state in Europe. When Europeans commemorate the Great War of 1914-18 this summer they should be reflecting not only on the diplomatic blunders and the enormous waste of lives but also the beginning of a new approach to international relations epitomised by the EU. The First World War destroyed empires, created numerous new nation-states, encoura...

87 Celebrities Who Got Totally Naked on Camera When it comes to getting naked in front of a camera, Hollywood stars have all kinds of stories. Whether they’re working through a choreographed sex scene or just hanging out in the nude, most of your favorite actors have bared it all at one point or another and created some of the most iconic moments in film history. To be clear, we are never, ever advocating for stars to be pressured into nudity they’re uncomfortable with, or for movies to rely on objectifying women’s bodies in lieu of, say, giving them lines. Hollywood has gotten much wiser in handling those sensitive scenes, so there are now intimacy coordinators, who ensure the well-being of the actors on set. With everyone involved on the same page, nudity can do so much for a movie — and we love hearing what the stars who have gotten totally naked for their roles have to say about the process. While many actors share the experience of getting naked on camera, their memories and feelin...

And she has now been filmed performing the bizarre act of strapping two very confused-looking blokes to a lead and making them slam their manhood into the faces of the audience. The First World War as a Global War

Image
The First World War as a Global War How does a regular war become a world war? It’s a tough question to answer, but asking who fought, what they fought for, and where they fought should give you a fighting chance. What makes a war a “world” war? The First World War began with an assassination in Bosnia, a small place in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in Europe’s Balkan Peninsula. The fight it set off among European states may seem small for the start of a war so big. So how did it happen? The truth is, the First World War was much bigger than just a European conflict. That was true from the very beginning, in August 1914. In the years that followed, it grew even larger. By 1918, most of the world’s population was officially at war, and even the countries that tried not to take sides were getting involved in some way. Let’s look closer at who was fighting, why they were fighting, and where they were fighting. Who fought? Empire vs. empire In August 1914, two large alliances faced off again...

The majority joined on the side of the Allies, including Serbia, Russia, France, Britain, Italy and the United States. They were opposed by Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire, who together formed the Central Powers. What began as a relatively small conflict in southeast Europe became a war between European empires. Britain and its Empire’s entry into the war made this a truly global conflict fought on a geographical scale never seen before. Fighting occurred not only on the Western Front, but in eastern and southeast Europe, Africa and the Middle East.... The First World War was not inevitable or accidental, but began as a result of human actions and decisions. Over 65 million men volunteered or were conscripted to fight in mass citizen armies. Millions of civilians also contributed to the war effort by working in industry, agriculture or jobs left open when men enlisted. Victory d...

Technology of war in 1914

Image
Technology of war in 1914 The planning and conduct of war in 1914 were crucially influenced by the invention of new weapons and the improvement of existing types since the Franco-German War of 1870–71. The chief developments of the intervening period had been the machine gun and the rapid-fire field artillery gun. The modern machine gun,  which had been developed in the 1880s and ’90s, was a reliable belt-fed gun capable of sustained rates of extremely rapid fire; it could fire 600 bullets per minute with a range of more than 1,000 yards (900 metres). In the realm of field artillery, the period leading up to the war saw the introduction of improved breech-loading mechanisms and brakes. Without a brake or recoil mechanism, a gun lurched out of position during firing and had to be re-aimed after each round. The new improvements were epitomized in the French 75-millimetre field gun; it remained motionless during firing, and it was not necessary to readjust the aim in order to bring su...

A 1969 timeline: Turbulent year signaled major societal change The news in 1969 may not have been as big or as bad as in 1968, which had the Kennedy and King assassinations.  But there was more of it in 1969, and whatever happened in any category was usually stranger than what had come before it in a decade that had already been strange to the extreme The most astonishing events could be easily reduced to a handful: Woodstock, People’s Park, Charlie Manson, the Zodiac, the moon landing, the Alcatraz occupation, the Miracle Mets, Broadway Joe, the Weathermen, Chappaquiddick and “Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice.” Fifty years later, you can mention any of these to someone who remembers, and you will be headed deep into tumult and trivia. It’s why we decided to task our Chronicle writers and critics to take a deep dive into that year’s cultural moments; the landmark bits of music, film and television that helped shape 1969, and the years — decades — that followed. You can read th...
