Ida Laura Pfeiffer (1797-1858)

Ida Laura Pfeiffer (1797-1858), an Austrian-born pioneer, was among the world's earliest female explorers. She embarked on her global travels




 at the age of 45, visiting numerous countries across all continents. Her accounts of these journeys became immensely popular and were translated into several languages.

Pfeiffer began to realize her lifelong ambition to explore the world after her husband died and her children had moved out. She undertook multiple expeditions to Africa, South America, and Australia, documenting her adventures in detail. Although she was accepted into the geographical societies in Paris and Berlin, her application was rejected by the London society simply because she was a woman
