Civil War in Liberia


Liberia, founded by freed American slaves, suffered years of brutal civil war both before and after Charles Taylor's election as President in 1997. Once a guerrilla trained under Libya’s Moammar Gadhafi, an escapee of a Boston maximum security prison with the rumoured help of the CIA for whom he was an informant, a convicted warlord accused of fuelling civil war in Sierra Leone through weapons sales for blood diamonds, the history of Charles Taylor is both impossibly bizarre and gruesomely brutal. One of his election slogans was reported to be "He killed my ma, he killed my pa, but I will vote for him".
By 2003 the capital Monrovia was besieged by rebel forces with bitter battles being fought across the city. Under intense regional and U.S. pressure Taylor agreed to step down in exchange for exile, leaving a weary nation to start to rebuild. However he was subsequently handed over and convicted of war crimes in 2015.

The Trojan Women (Ancient Greek: Τρῳάδες, romanized: Trōiades), also translated as The Women of Troy, and also known by its  transliterated Greek title Troades, is a tragedy by the Greek playwright Euripides. Produced in 415 BC during the Peloponnesian War, it is often considered a commentary on the capture of the Aegean island of Melos and the subsequent slaughter and subjugation of its populace by the Athenians earlier that year (see History of Milos).[1] 415 BC was also the year of the scandalous desecration of the hermai and the launch of the Athenians' second expedition to Sicily, events which may also have influenced the author. The Weirdest Marriage in the World was in the 80's. Started when Swiss Corina Hoffman visited Kenya. Hofmann and her boyfriend Marco made a trip to Kenya. There, she met a Samburu wàrrior named Lketinga Leparmorijo and instantly found him irresistible. She left Marco, went back to Switzerland to sell her possessions, and, in 1987, returned to Kenya, determined to find Lketinga, which she eventually did. The couple moved in together, married, and had a daughter. Hofmann moved into her mother-in-law's manyatta (compound) and learned to live as a Samburu woman, fetching wood and water. She opened a small shop in the village, to sell basic goods. Hofmann suffered several hàrdships, including disèases (mainly malaria) and marital problems. Technology of war in 1914 The planning and conduct of war in 1914 were crucially influenced by the invention of new weapons and the improvement of existing types since the Franco-German War of 1870–71. The chief developments of the intervening period had been the machine gun and the rapid-fire field artillery gun. The modern machine gun,  which had been developed in the 1880s and ’90s, was a reliable belt-fed gun capable of sustained rates of extremely rapid fire; it could fire 600 bullets per minute with a range of more than 1,000 yards (900 metres). In the realm of field artillery, the period leading up to the war saw the introduction of improved breech-loading mechanisms and brakes.
