ONE SMALL THING What makes kids picky eaters — and what may help them get over it Tips you can use to help raise kids who aren’t afraid of food. Power struggles can teach kids the wrong messages about food.KidStock  Some kids are happy to snack on carrots, raw peppers and hummus, while other kids would be happy to follow a carb-based “white” diet of pasta, rice and bread. Why are some kids so fussy about food? It turns out there a dizzying number of reasons your child may turn up his nose at mealtimes. A 2015 review of dozens of studies that date back to the 1990s that looked at kids' eating patterns found that fussy, picky or choosy eating habits were linked to and affected by everything from personality traits to parental control at mealtime to social influences to maternal eating patterns. Or it could just be your kid being, well, a kid. An important point to remember is that fussy or picky eating is normal in young kids, says Lee Gibson, PhD, a reader in biopsychology an...

Another addition to the "Underrated

Another addition to the "Underrated/Unknown War Movie" list. Taegukgi: The Brotherhood Of War. Tells the story of two brothers who are forcibly drafted into the South Korean army at the outbreak of the Korean War and how one brother will do ANYTHING to send his younger brother home safely. Filled with high drama and visceral, well-crafted combat scenes. Very impressive overall based on the fact that it was made on 1/5 of the budget as Saving Private Ryan & is arguably just as powerful. I can't recommend this film enough. The ending will break you πŸ’―

topless dancing where alcohol was sold. New York’s

topless dancing where alcohol was sold. New York’s highest state court ruled in their favor, deciding that banning toplessness in bars was a violation of the freedom of  expression, and the U.S. Supreme Court agreed with the ruling.  That was good news for the city’s 40 to 50 topless bars, 13 of which were located in Times Square and the surrounding blocks. But despite the legal victory, topless entertainment was suffering an economic slide: a 1982 report from the mayor’s office indicated that the total number of sex-related businesses in Times Square had fallen from 147 in 1976 to 74 by the end of 1982. 1994: The Enforcer Newly elected mayor Rudolph Giuliani cracked down on Times Square’s sex shops, calling for new zoning legislation that would prevent topless clubs, peep shows and similar businesses from clustering together. Many in midtown Manhattan vociferously opposed the sanitizing Disneyfication of Times Square, a process that included bringing The Lion King musical to ...

The history of women’s work and wages and how it has created success for us all

Image
The history of women’s work and wages and how it has created success for us all Janet L. Yellen MAY 2020 As we celebrate the centennial of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote, we should also celebrate the major strides women have made in the labor market. Their entry into paid work has been a major factor in America’s prosperity over the past century and a quarter. Despite this progress, evidence suggests that many women remain unable to achieve their goals. The gap in earnings between women and men, although smaller than it was years ago, is still significant; women continue to be underrepresented in certain industries and occupations; and too many women struggle to combine aspirations for work and family. Further advancement has been hampered by barriers to equal opportunity and workplace rules and norms that fail to support a reasonable work-life balance. If these obstacles persist, we will squander the potential of many of our citizens and incur a substantial loss t...

A German Fallschirmjäger holding an MG 42 machine gun over

A German Fallschirmjäger holding an MG 42 machine gun over his  shoulder, along with ammunition belts. This weapon was famous for its 1,200 rounds per minute rate of fire, which was very useful for blanketing an area in fire or hitting a fast-moving target. However it can also be troublesome, as a user can burn through ammunition very quickly and overheat barrels. MG 42 operator's, as is typical for support gunners, were trained to fire in short bursts to alleviate these issues.

Rockwell regularly featured the same models in his compositions and recruited students from New Rochelle High School to pose for his paintings...

Demetia (De-Meet-Ah) Hopkins-

Image
Demetia (De-Meet-Ah) Hopkins-Greene, 29, began her career at age 4, when she started training at her  uncle’s studio in Virginia. Although she practiced jazz, ballet, hip-hop, tap, and even Irish step, ultimately landing an eight-year tenure dancing with the Alvin Ailey Dance Companies, she’d never dabbled in nude dancing until she was approached by famed photographer Jordan Matter for a book project known as Dancers After Dark. Here’s how the self-proclaimed introvert found herself posing naked in the middle of New York City’s Fifth Avenue. You’ve never modeled naked before, so what made you agree to do it? The opportunity came to me around the same time I was considering leaving Alvin Ailey to spend less time traveling, and Jordan Matter’s mission statement really spoke to me: It said, “take the leap and the net will appear.” I felt like taking this leap could help bring me a step towards being a little braver and bolder in my career. But I was still unsure about posing naked — as...

Baartman's promoters nicknamed her the "Hottentot Venus

Baartman's promoters nicknamed her the "Hottentot Venus", with "hottentot" - now seen as derogatory - then being used in Dutch to describe the Khoikhoi and San, who together make up the peoples known as the Khoisan. The British Empire had abolished the slave trade in 1807, but not slavery itself. Even so, campaigners were appalled at Baartman's treatment in London. Her employers were prosecuted for holding Baartman against her will, but not convicted, with Baartman herself testifying in their favour. "The question remains - was Baartman coerced, as abolitionist/humanitarian campaigners claimed, or was she acting on her own free will?" says Christer Petley, a history lecturer at Southampton University. "If she was coerced, she might have felt too intimidated to tell the truth in court. We'll never know. "The case is complex and the relationship between Baartman and her handlers was certainly not equally weighted, even if she had some e...

Baartman's life was one of huge hardship

Image
Baartman's life was one of huge hardship. It is thought she was born in South Africa's Eastern Cape in 1789, her mother died when she was two and her father, a cattle driver, died when she was an adolescent. She  entered domestic service in Cape Town after a Dutch colonist murdered her partner, with whom she had had a baby who died. In October 1810, although illiterate, Baartman allegedly signed a contract with English ship surgeon William Dunlop and mixed-race entrepreneur Hendrik Cesars, in whose household she worked, saying she would travel to England to take part in shows. The reason was that Baartman, also known as Sara or Saartjie, had what was called "steatopygia", resulting in extremely protuberant buttocks due to a build-up of fat. These made her a cause of fascination when she was exhibited at a venue in London's Piccadilly Circus after her arrival. "You have to remember that, at the time, it was highly fashionable and desirable for women to have la...
