king-leopold Most people have no idea of who is pictured above, but you should. The sight of this man should cause a similar revulsion to that of seeing Mussolini, Mao, Stalin or Hitler, as he committed an African genocide that resulted in the killing of over 10 million people in the Congo. His name is King Leopold II of Belgium. Most of people never learned about him in school, and have also most likely never heard about him in the media either. This is because he’s not included in the popular narrative of oppression (which includes things like U.S. slavery and the Holocaust). King Leopold II is part of an ongoing history of colonialism, imperialism, slavery, and genocide in Africa that would clash with the popular social narratives taught in our school system today. There is a little known about area

There is a little known about area just south west of Rothbury in Northumberland, England which was brought to my attention by friend Philip Malcolmson Stead who runs Ancestral Journeys,thank you good  sir. This is a place of incredible and impressive cairns which await the curious onlooker and which lie on the summits of the Simonside hills. Not only that but ancient rock art lie scattered within the vicinity of the Iron Age enclosure on Lordenshaw. Interestingly for a number of days close to the summer solstice which falls on the longest day of the year being of course the 21st June, the holed stone which also goes by the name of the Solstice stone or Thompson's stone offers an incredible view as the sun sets just a few degrees west of the Cheviot.  This area of Northumberland is packed full of prehistoric remnants which have stood the test of time as many other ancient sites have done all over the globe but here during midsummer one particular stone being the holed stone of...

The shock of the nude: Brazil’s stark new form of political protest If ever there were a city where disrupting traffic felt like a political act, it would be São Paulo. Its 15 million inhabitants routinely take an hour to drive across town and can waste a month per year just  getting to and from work. So when the dancers of Cia. Les Commediens Tropicales step in front of the moving vehicles on Avenida Paulista, sashaying in their bright party dresses and sombre suits to a jazzy Brazilian beat, it feels like an act of defiance. In a street-theatre intervention entitled (See[]Have) Adrift, they lie on the tarmac, flirt with drivers and hitch lifts on the sides of trucks, turning the cars into reluctant dance partners. Today in Hampton History 1861 - Confederate troops systematically  burn the entire town of Hampton. Brig. Gen. John B. Magruder issued the order after reading a letter from U.S. Maj. Gen. Benjamin F. Butler, printed in the New York Tribune, outlining plans for self-emancipated “Contrabands”* to settle there.  Butler’s dispatch also argued that Freedom Seekers escaping slavery should be treated as free men, women, and children entitled to the “free enjoyment of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Magruder, enraged at Butler’s plan to “colonize them [the Contrabands] at Hampton, the home of most of their owners,” ordered local troops under Capt. Jefferson Curle Phillips to lead the burning.   Inhabitants of the entire Hampton Roads area were astounded at the glow and flames, visible for miles.
