Rome may have been an incredible empire, but it was also utterly brutal.

Rome may have been an incredible empire, but it was also utterly brutal. Let’s do a quick list: Utterly brutal punishments When it came to punishing criminals, enemies and, anyone else they didn’t like, the Romans were brutal and cruel. Here are but a few of the most violent punishments they used: —Mass Crucifixion In situations such as slave revolts, the Romans would often mass-crucify thousands and thousands together. —Decimation Decimation was a punishment given to legionaries for severe breaches of discipline, the most common cause being if they fled the field of battle. Each cohort would be split into groups of 10, each drawing straws. Whoever drew the short straw would then be beaten to death by the other 9. Just imagine the brutality to being forced to beat to death your closest friends and colleagues, not to even consider being the one that drew the short straw. —Buried Alive The Vestal Virgins were a groups of virgins who had an oath of chastity to the Goddess Vesta. From 1971: Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?

Image
From 1971: Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists? A version of this story originally appeared in the January 1971 issue of ARTnews. While the recent upsurge of feminist activity in this country has indeed been a liberating one, its force has been chiefly emotional—personal, psychological and subjective—centered, like the other radical movements to which it is related, on the present and its immediate needs, rather than on historical analysis of the basic intellectual issues which the feminist attack on the status quo automatically raises.1 Like any revolution, however, the feminist one ultimately must come to grips with the intellectual and ideological basis of the various intellectual or scholarly disciplines—history, philosophy, sociology, psychology, etc.—in the same way that it questions the ideologies of present social institutions. If, as John Stuart Mill suggested, we tend to accept whatever is as natural, this is just as true in the realm of academic investig...

Ronni Douglas, 26, was enjoying her all-inclusive TUI holiday in Bodrum when she was struck by intense stomach pains and uncontrollable vomiting just three days into her trip. The situation took a dire turn when Ronni was taken to hospital and diagnosed with a perforated oesophagus, an acute condition that creates a hole in the passage from the throat to the stomach, putting her life at risk. Her family is now facing a financial crisis as they work to cover the 'staggering' medical expenses. Already burdened with a £5,000 bill for her immediate care and potential surgery, the costs are expected to rise since Ronni cannot leave Tu...

John Kimber was the captain of a British slave ship who was tried

Image
John Kimber was the captain of a British slave ship who was tried for murder in 1792,  after the abolitionist William Wilberforce accused him of torturing to death an enslaved teenaged girl on the deck of his ship. Kimber was acquitted, but the trial gained much attention in the press. The case established that slave ships' crew could be tried for murder of slaves.Publicity about the case contributed to growing opposition to the African slave trade, which the British parliament prohibited in its colonies by the Slave Trade Act 1807.In 1791, John Kimber was the captain of Recovery, a slave ship of 189 tons (bm) from Bristol, England.[1] The Recovery travelled from Bristol to New Calabar in West Africa, where it collected approximately 300 slaves who were to be sold at Grenada in the Caribbean. The vessel left Africa on 1 September, and arrived at Grenada on 28 October, by which time 27 of the slaves had died.[2] "Dancing the slaves" was a regular part of the routine of a...

Communicating With Your Partner On Deployment

Image
Communicating With Your Partner On Deployment Hopefully, you and your service member had a discussion during pre-deployment about how often you'll communicate while he's gone. If you didn't do this before he left, it's not too late to try to establish these expectations now. However, even with a tentative calling or emailing schedule, both you and your service member may struggle to maintain the routine. As much as service members would like to establish a schedule for reaching their loved ones, their missions in a combat zone or operational activities may interfere. As a result, many spouses and partners carry cell phones with them at all times to avoid missing their service member's call. tone can be mistaken, causing confusion and conflict. Whenever possible, both you and your service member should give one another the benefit of the doubt when something that is expressed in writing just "doesn't seem right." This can save both of you a great deal o...
