On 19 February 1942,

On 19 February 1942, a programme to forcibly transport Japanese-American communities to internment camps began, with the ratification of Executive Order 9066. 


This came in the aftermath of the Pearl Harbor attack the previous December, as thousands of US citizens with Japanese ancestry were declared ‘alien enemies’. These measures far surpassed any taken towards Italians or Germans living in America.
