Two women caused a stir after they covered themselves in strawberry jam and sat down on a bench on a busy high street.

The women, who have not been named, drew a crowd of baffled onlookers on Market Street in Manchester city centre on Wednesday
They sat down in the nude just before the lunchtime rush – and had even placed some homemade bread in a toaster attach

ed to a car battery next to them.

The pair also attracted the attention of police, who said their actions were down to 'artistic expression.'

Police said the women were simply 'advised' by officers because their actions did not amount to a criminal offence.
Video footage showed them covered head to toe in a red spread while sat side by side on the bench.

They later used white sheets to cover themselves when police officers arrived at the scene.

Inspector Jon Middleton gave a few more details of the incident on the GMP City Centre Facebook page.

'The Police Officer on the right in the photo looks as confused as I am by this incident,' he wrote.

'I've just spoken to one of the officers who attended.

'Apparently they had a toaster plugged into a car battery with some homemade bread.

'The jam was strawberry and the reason was for artistic expression.'

He added: 'I'm informed the matter did not amount to a criminal offence, so the two women were advised and sent on their way.

'I just hope this isn't the start of a new craze that starts to spread
