Renaissance paintings and sculptures, all the way to stop-motion movies from the twentieth century, Medusa’s image is everywhere.



This particular painting was created by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio in 1597, depicting the moment where the Gorgon Medusa is killed by the demigod Perseus.

The gates of the castle were wide open and the carriages of rich nobles trooped in. The air seemed lighter,  the sun seemed to have a noble glow to it. Cherry smiles and laughter could be seen and heard all around Inside one of the castle rooms, a beautiful young lady stood watching the crowd of nobles below through the window of her room. She rubbed her fingers against the flat end of a wooden necklace that had three sevens grafted on it's surface. It was a departing gift from someone dear to her. Her eyes were dull and lacked excitement. The merry seemed to be non-existent within the walls of her luxurious room. "Lady Rose! Are you dressed yet? Photo: Courtesy of MWTH Project and the artist On the good side, the idiotic, generic, realist bronze sculpture of Medusa With the Head of Perseus — a 2008 sculpture by 47-year-old Argentine craftsman-artist Luciano Garbati now installed across from the courthouses on Centre Street — isn’t quite as bad as that awful  rhinoceros stack that adorned Astor Place a few years back. It’s not the overwhelming folly that Thomas Heatherwick’s gyros-shaped Vessel is, his public amusement sculpture plunked down in the middle of Hudson Yards. Public art is hard to do well, unless maybe you’re Kara Walker. Still, this explicitly naked, seven-foot female statue with shaved pudenda is still pure crapola and shouldn’t be here at all. The First Liberian Civil War ended in August 1997 when Charles Taylor took power as the President of Liberia.  Taylor had initiated the war when he and his militia, the National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL), invaded the country from the Ivory Coast to overthrow President Samuel Doe in December 1989. The NPFL rapidly conquered most of Liberia except for the capital Monrovia, which came under the control of the Independent National Patriotic Front of Liberia (INPFL), a splinter group led by Prince Johnson. The INPFL captured and executed Doe in September 1990 and resisted attempts by the NPFL to take Monrovia, denying Taylor an outright victory and prolonging the war for years. A peace agreement was signed in 1996 between the major factions and resulted in the 1997 Liberian general election. Taylor won a landslide victory with 75% of the vote for the presidency, while his National Patriotic Party dominated the Legislature of Liberia. His success was mainly due to his control ove...
