Unfortunately it is the last time that the fair takes place at the Van Nellefabriek, a powerful monument of Dutch modernism built between 1925 and 1931.

On this day, 5 May 1818, Karl Marx was born in Trier, Germany. Living until the age of 64, Marx was a journalist, revolutionary socialist, philosopher and economist, and one of the most influential figures in world history.  He inspired hundreds of millions with his works, including Capital which, over a century later, remains the most incisive critique of the capitalist system.  Though his wife was from a wealthy background, Marx and his family often lived in abject poverty, and four of their children died in infancy. His children who survived to adulthood all became socialist activists in their own right, including his eldest daughter Jenny who also died before him. Despite his often difficult circumstances and the tragedy in his personal life, Marx was also well up for a laugh. Pata Seca, a black slave forced to father children with enslaved women Pata Seca, born Roque José Florêncio, was a remarkable figure in the history of slavery in Brazil. Taken into slavery at a young age, he was forced into hard labor and subjected to being a breeder, fathering over 200 children. Standing seven feet tall and weighing around 300 pounds, he was chosen for this role with the misguided belief that his physical attributes would yield strong offspring. Despite his circumstances, Pata Seca emerged as a leader and freedom fighter, aiding many slaves in escaping to safe houses known as quilombos. He was not only a figure of physical strength but also of intellectual might, educating his children in their native language and culture. Tragically, Pata Seca’s early life details, including memories of his family, were lost due to the early age at which he was enslaved. The Battle of Missionary Ridge, also known as the Battle of Chattanooga, was fought on November 25, 1863, as part of the Chattanooga campaign of the American Civil War. Following the Union victory in the Battle of Lookout  Mountain on November 24, Union forces in the Military Division of the Mississippi under Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant assaulted Missionary Ridge and defeated the Confederate Army of Tennessee, commanded by Gen. Braxton Bragg, forcing it to retreat to Georgia. In the morning, Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman, commanding the Union Army of the Tennessee, made piecemeal attacks to capture the northern end of Missionary Ridge, Tunnel Hill, but were stopped by fierce resistance from the Confederate divisions of Maj. Court rules against woman who became face of China’s #MeToo movement in landmark verdict Mr Zhu was accused of forcibly groping and kissing Zhou Xiaoxuan while she was an intern at state broadcaster CCTV in 2014. Through a series of social media posts in 2018, Ms Zhou levelled  allegations of sexual harassment against Mr Zhu. He has denied all the allegations.Her accusations took Chinese social media by storm, prompting other women to come forward with their own accounts of sexual harassment. Ms Zhou, popularly known by her online name Xianzi, quickly became the face of the country’s #MeToo movement, sparking a nationwide debate. Ms Zhou filed a lawsuit against Mr Zhu three years ago, seeking a public apology and damages of 50,000 yuan (about £5,600).
