Alfred Vivian Minchin (27th of January 1917

Alfred Vivian Minchin (27th of January 1917 –  February 1998) was a British merchant seaman captured on the 28th of March 1942 when the SS Empire Ranger, a cargo ship that was part of a Murmansk convoy, was sunk off Norway by German bombers. The Murmansk convoy was an Arctic convoy that delivered war supplies to the Soviet Union. As a prisoner he joined the Waffen-SS’s British Free Corps, holding the rank of Sturmmann, meaning Storm man in English, and reportedly suggested the unit’s name. On the 8th of  March 1945, VE Day, he was in the SS hospital at Lichterfelde-West in Berlin being treated for scabies. After liberation he faced trial at the Old Bailey in London, and on the 5th of February 1946 he was convicted of conspiring to assist the enemy, receiving seven years’ penal servitude. From family to factory: women's lives during the Industrial Revolution The Industrial Revolution saw thousands of women enter the workplace alongside men – but it was far from emancipatory, writes Elinor Evans The Industrial Revolution caused a dramatic shift in women’s roles in society. Before industrialisation, the household would have been the centre of production, and women’s work largely confined to the domestic sphere, but no less physical for it. Tasks such as fetching water, and tending livestock would have kept women as busy as clothing and feeding a family, while many also took other work into their home such as hand-spinning or weaving. Cottage industry, as it was called, didn’t entirely end with the arrival of large- scale manufacturing, but the advent of machinery had an irreversible impact on women’s lives. A 10-year-old, Goodness Oshodi, has buried alive his stepbrother, Friday Oshodi, for allegedly stealing their mother’s N1,000. The elder brother, who has been arrested by the police, said he took the action following the directive of his mother. According to a trending video, the incident occurred on Tuesday evening at Apamisede, a community in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.Goodness was however lucky as good Samaritans were still able to exhume him aliveWhen he was asked why he decided to bury his brother alive, Friday said he was only carrying out the instructions of his mother to punish Friday for stealing her N1,000. He claimed that at the time of the rescue of Goodness, their mum was in the church. Confirming the incident and arrest of Friday, the spokesman of the Kogi State Police Command, William Aya, said he was undergoing interrogation.
