Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In

"Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In," a groundbreaking American sketch comedy television program, aired

from 1968 to 1973 on NBC. It became famous for its rapid-fire sketches, political and social satire, catchphrases, and an array of talented cast members, including several notable female comedians who contributed immensely to its success.

Goldie Hawn (born November 21, 1945), perhaps the most famous alumna, became known for her bubbly persona and "dumb blonde" characters on "Laugh-In." Hawn's time on the show (1968-1970) catapulted her into stardom, leading to a successful film career, including an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Cactus Flower" (1969). Judy Carne (born Joyce Botterill, April 27, 1939 – September 3, 2015, in Northamptonshire, England) was another prominent figure on the show, known for popularizing the phrase "Sock it to me!" Carne's career was marked by her comedic timing and physical comedy, although she faced personal challenges in her later years. Jo Anne Worley (born September 6, 1937) was renowned for her loud, zany humor and was a significant part of the cast from 1968 to 1970. Her work on "Laugh-In" highlighted her comedic and singing talents, leading to a diversified career in television, theater, and voice work.

Ruth Buzzi (born July 24, 1936) was a versatile performer on "Laugh-In," known for her character Gladys Ormphby, the dowdy spinster who invariably used her purse to thwack people during sketches. Buzzi's comedic range and timing made her a standout on the show, and she has enjoyed a long career in television and film. Chelsea Brown (born Lois Brown on December 6, 1942 – March 27, 2017, in Chicago, Illinois) was another talented actress and comedian on "Laugh-In," known for her dance numbers and comedic sketches. Brown's role on the show helped pave the way for future African American comedians in sketch comedy. Together, these women were pivotal to the success and legacy of "Laugh-In," each bringing their unique talents to the forefront of American comedy.
