This Day in History:  It was on November 15, 1818 when the Cayuga-Seneca Canal opened—ultimately connecting Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake to the Erie Canal.

Approximately 20 miles long, this waterway was pivotal in the transporting of goods between Waterloo and Seneca Falls here in the Finger Lakes Region.  Lots of commerce passed on this waterway in those formative years.  The old Seneca Knitting Mills in Seneca Falls (pictured here) once produced 85,000 pairs of high quality socks for the Army and Navy.  The iconic Erie Canal would open seven years later in 1825.  To commemorate today’s anniversary of this historic canal opening, here are various captures of mine from the Cayuga-Seneca Canal in Seneca Falls.  The first one here was of that spectacular 1929 commuter yacht I came upon this summer, now based out of Quebec.  It’s one of just three in existence in the world—all original, never restored.  I really enjoy my visits to this Canal in Seneca Falls—now part of the New York State Canal System.
