This Week in History: 1974 The Vancouver Canucks get streaked
Running naked at public events was all the rage in North America at the

timeThis advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. But there is one, by the late Province photographer Bill Cunningham. And it’s hilarious.

Cunningham had been tipped off about the streak and set up his camera up high at the end of the rink, which gave him an unrestricted view of the women as they ran down the ice in front of the benches for the Canucks and the New York Islanders.

One of the women is wearing one of those Groucho Marx glasses/nose/moustache masks, socks and runners. She has dark hair, as does another streaker running close to the Canucks bench.

The third streaker is blond, and looks like the happiest woman in Vancouver — it’s a miracle she didn’t collapse in laughter onto the ice.

The looks on the players are priceless. The Canucks look stunned, while the Islanders seem captivated — some players are flashing toothless smiles and craning their heads to get a better look.

The fans are enjoying it most of all, smiling and laughing at the spectacle. Nobody seemed offended, except maybe Islanders coach Al Arbour, whose team had the puck when the game was interrupted at 5:38 of the first period.

Nobody has taken credit for the stunt. But the theory has always been it was concocted by Mario Caravetta of the Coliseum with Canucks PR man Greg Douglas and Joe Philliponi and Ross Filippone of the Penthouse Cabaret, who may have employed the streakers.
