The “Bay Tree” egg

Image
The “Bay Tree” egg; was presented to the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna by her son, Emperor Nicholas II, on Easter 1911.⠀ ⠀ The motif of the evergreen laurel, symbolizing immortality and glory, was not chosen by chance - that year marked 30 years since Maria Feodorovna’s accession to the Russian throne.⠀ ⠀ The crown of the laurel tree is egg-shaped and consists of 325 leaves carved from Sayan jade - a stone that, due to its remarkable plastic properties, was especially loved by Carl Faberge and was used to create many of his company's masterpieces. A golden songbird is placed in the jade crown of the tree, whose mechanism was made so well that it works perfectly to this day.⠀ ⠀ Empress Maria Feodorovna had a weakness for birds, and Faberge, knowing this, often supplied Easter gifts intended for her with mechanical birds. Rubens & Women review – ‘Naked breasts moved him religiously

Image
Rubens & Women review – ‘Naked breasts moved him religiously Maria Serra Pallavicino is a queen. Technically she’s a Marchesa. But no one could look more monarchical here, in the painting by Peter Paul Rubens. She looks down imperiously from the throne where she sits swathed in silver, with an impossibly huge ruff collar of floating filigree lace tinged with gold. But it’s her intense face and dark eyes that hold you. Amid her finery, she’s engaging and mysterious, her personality more precious than her pearls. Rubens is a painter’s painter. No great artist communicates the sheer fun of holding a paintbrush like he does. He’s an ebullient chef, laying on thick sauces of glinting, creamy colour. And women were his favourite ingredients. He lavished his attentions on them clothed and naked, at prayer and in bed. The intimacy and warmth of the results make Dulwich Picture Gallery’s show Rubens & Women a riotous feast. It starts with a staggering array of grand yet disarming portra...

The First Liberian Civil War ended in August 1997 when Charles Taylor took power as the President of Liberia

The First Liberian Civil War ended in August 1997 when Charles Taylor took power as the President of Liberia.  Taylor had initiated the war when he and his militia, the National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL), invaded the country from the Ivory Coast to overthrow President Samuel Doe in December 1989. The NPFL rapidly conquered most of Liberia except for the capital Monrovia, which came under the control of the Independent National Patriotic Front of Liberia (INPFL), a splinter group led by Prince Johnson. The INPFL captured and executed Doe in September 1990 and resisted attempts by the NPFL to take Monrovia, denying Taylor an outright victory and prolonging the war for years. A peace agreement was signed in 1996 between the major factions and resulted in the 1997 Liberian general election. Taylor won a landslide victory with 75% of the vote for the presidency, while his National Patriotic Party dominated the Legislature of Liberia. His success was mainly due to his control ove...
