A 65-year-old man who was arrested earlier this month for allegedly killing his former lover and her daughter now faces trial on two counts of premeditated murder.
On Friday morning, Park Hak-sun was transported to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, which is expected to indict him soon on charges of murdering the women at an officetel (a multi-purpose building with residential and commercial units) in Gangnam District, southern Seoul on May 30.
According to police, Park claimed that he inadvertently killed his former partner, in her 60s, and her daughter, in her 30s. But based on evidence collected so far, police have concluded that Park had planned to kill the women.
The woman in her 60s died at the scene as a result of being assaulted with a weapon while the daughter was taken to a nearby hospital where she died soon thereafter.
It is believed that Park was infuriated at the woman who had recently broken up with him as her family members reportedly opposed their relationship.
When asked whether he committed the crimes after she decided to end the relationship, he said "no," as he was being taken to a police vehicle.
Given the amount of criminal evidence secured and the high level of cruelty demonstrated, a committee under the National Police Agency decided to reveal the name and photo of the suspect on June 4.
