Two US Personnel on a “gun truck” in Vietnam - 1969/1970

“Gun Trucks”, as they became known, were originally built on 2.5-ton 6x6 cargo trucks (Deuce and a Half), protected by a barrier of sandbags, later replaced with ad hoc steel armor equipped with all manner of weapons.

The need for the gun trucks arose when the VC started ambushing US truck convoys. In the event of an ambush, the role of the gun truck was to drive into the kill zone and saturate the attackers with their firepower.

Later 5-ton trucks and other vehicles were used successfully in the role.

Major John Phillip Hunter, Royal Australian Army Service Corps, was attached to the 8th Transportation Group (US Army) between December 10, 1969 to January 10, 1970 to study transport operations and management.
