Rome may have been an incredible empire, but it was also utterly brutal. Let’s do a quick list: Utterly brutal punishments When it came to punishing criminals, enemies and, anyone else they didn’t like, the Romans were brutal and cruel. Here are but a few of the most violent punishments they used: —Mass Crucifixion In situations such as slave revolts, the Romans would often mass-crucify thousands and thousands together. —Decimation Decimation was a punishment given to legionaries for severe breaches of discipline, the most common cause being if they fled the field of battle. Each cohort would be split into groups of 10, each drawing straws. Whoever drew the short straw would then be beaten to death by the other 9. Just imagine the brutality to being forced to beat to death your closest friends and colleagues, not to even consider being the one that drew the short straw. —Buried Alive The Vestal Virgins were a groups of virgins who had an oath of chastity to the Goddess Vesta. Imagine a network of trails carved into the very spine of mountains

Imagine a network of trails carved into the very spine of mountains , traversed by a tireless flow of human porters bearing precious cargo on their backs. This was the reality of the Ancient Tea-Horse Road, a vital artery of trade that snaked through the rugged landscapes of southwestern China, connecting the tea-rich regions of Sichuan with Tibet for centuries. A photograph from 1908 captures a poignant moment along this arduous route in Sichuan Sheng: porters, their bodies bent under the weight of tightly compressed tea packages, their faces etched with determination, embarking on a journey that was as much a lifeline as it was a testament to human endurance. The Tea-Horse Road was more than just a trade route; it was a conduit of culture, a pathway for the exchange of not only tea and horses (the primary commodities traded) but also religion, customs, and ideas between the Han Chinese and the Tibetan people. The porters, often walking for weeks or even months, faced treacherous terr...

From 1971: Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?

Image
From 1971: Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists? A version of this story originally appeared in the January 1971 issue of ARTnews. While the recent upsurge of feminist activity in this country has indeed been a liberating one, its force has been chiefly emotional—personal, psychological and subjective—centered, like the other radical movements to which it is related, on the present and its immediate needs, rather than on historical analysis of the basic intellectual issues which the feminist attack on the status quo automatically raises.1 Like any revolution, however, the feminist one ultimately must come to grips with the intellectual and ideological basis of the various intellectual or scholarly disciplines—history, philosophy, sociology, psychology, etc.—in the same way that it questions the ideologies of present social institutions. If, as John Stuart Mill suggested, we tend to accept whatever is as natural, this is just as true in the realm of academic investig...
