Tracking Historical Representations of the Female Nude



French painting in the mid-nineteenth century is characterized by the critical transformation from the academic, neoclassical style to more innovative and progressive types. The idealized, nude goddess of the neoclassical tradition was gradually replaced by modern varieties in which avant-garde painters chose the representation of the female nude as a front for their challenge to the accepted standards of the Academy

In French academic art, female nudity was only permissible within the context of a recognizable narrative in an imaginary, mythological or biblical landscape. However, forward-thinking artists portray women in a naturalistic form, engaged in everyday activities, undermining established clichés of femininity and eliminating the voyeurism associated with traditional nudes of the period.

By analyzing the evolving relationship between the fine art of the female nude, its reception, and political movements in nineteenth-century France, we will explore how realist and impressionist representations diverged from the ancient Greek ideal. Large parts of the Caribbean will be depopulated during the European conquest. Increasingly, captives will be shipped from Africa to replace the enslaved Indians. 1600s transatlantic slave tradeSlave traders transfer captives to a ship along the western coast of Africa. The Africans will be transported across the Atlantic Ocean and enslaved in the Americas. The Dutch, English, and French also establish colonies in the New World and become major participants in the transatlantic slave trade. The Battle of Mount Ortigara (June 1917)  was not the largest or most costly battle on the Italian front, but for nineteen days in June of 1917 it was a microcosm of mountain front's warfare and the terrible attrition of the Great War. Ortigara is often called "the Calvary of the Alpini" with its useless sacrifice of Italy's finest troops. In a determined offensive on the Trentino Plateau, Italian General Ettore Mambretti seized strategic Monte Ortigara. However it was quickly retaken by Austrian General Artur von Mecenseffy in some of the bloodiest alpine fighting of the war. Austria lost 9,000 casualties, and the Italians sacrificed over 23,000 men (2,800 killed). The Tainos were the first original settlers in Hispaniola island which is now of course the Dominican republic. It was in fact the famed explorer Christopher Columbus who discovered this indigenous Indian  civilisation upon landing on the island on October 12th 1492 in his quest to find a quicker trade route to India thinking he was closer than he actually was. Eventually this fascinating little known about indigenous tribe were wiped out by conquerors and disease with only a very small number of families today who hold the bloodline of the Taino. So with all that said, the Taino worshipped a deity known as the Zemi an image which wascarved into countless numbers of artefacts and made into enigmatic figurines which have thankfully survived because it gives us a good idea what Zemi looked like. The Battle of Missionary Ridge, also known as the Battle of Chattanooga, was fought on November 25, 1863, as part of the Chattanooga campaign of the American Civil War. Following the Union victory in the Battle of Lookout  Mountain on November 24, Union forces in the Military Division of the Mississippi under Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant assaulted Missionary Ridge and defeated the Confederate Army of Tennessee, commanded by Gen. Braxton Bragg, forcing it to retreat to Georgia. In the morning, Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman, commanding the Union Army of the Tennessee, made piecemeal attacks to capture the northern end of Missionary Ridge, Tunnel Hill, but were stopped by fierce resistance from the Confederate divisions of Maj.
