Tracking Historical Representations of the Female Nude



French painting in the mid-nineteenth century is characterized by the critical transformation from the academic, neoclassical style to more innovative and progressive types. The idealized, nude goddess of the neoclassical tradition was gradually replaced by modern varieties in which avant-garde painters chose the representation of the female nude as a front for their challenge to the accepted standards of the Academy

In French academic art, female nudity was only permissible within the context of a recognizable narrative in an imaginary, mythological or biblical landscape. However, forward-thinking artists portray women in a naturalistic form, engaged in everyday activities, undermining established clichés of femininity and eliminating the voyeurism associated with traditional nudes of the period.

By analyzing the evolving relationship between the fine art of the female nude, its reception, and political movements in nineteenth-century France, we will explore how realist and impressionist representations diverged from the ancient Greek ideal.   John Kimber was the captain of a British slave ship who was tried for murder in 1792,  after the abolitionist William Wilberforce accused him of torturing to death an enslaved teenaged girl on the deck of his ship. Kimber was acquitted, but the trial gained much attention in the press. The case established that slave ships' crew could be tried for murder of slaves.Publicity about the case contributed to growing opposition to the African slave trade, which the British parliament prohibited in its colonies by the Slave Trade Act 1807.In 1791, John Kimber was the captain of Recovery, a slave ship of 189 tons (bm) from Bristol, England.[1] The Recovery travelled from Bristol to New Calabar in West Africa, where it collected approximately 300 slaves who were to be sold at Grenada in the Caribbean. Did you know Clint Eastwood once worked as a logger before landing breakout role in Hollywood? In 1949, Clint Eastwood left Oakland Technical High School to take up a risky outdoor job. He became a logger at the Weyerhaeuser Company Mills, where his father also worked. Eastwood relocated to Springfield, Oregon, where he was paid $1.80 an hour, a substantial wage at that time, for his work in tree felling.
